15.

The newly re-named Fliss opened the door as quietly as she could. Adam was home and she didn't want to deal with him. It had been far too good a day to have him bring her down. She'd stayed at Teresa's for dinner, the platter she'd put together, and a salad they made together, Fliss feeling comfortable and happy in the kitchen.

Nothing more had been said by either of them about the kiss at the beach, but Fliss could still feel it on her lips. She let herself in, stared in dismay at the mess in the kitchen, and heard a squeal of laughter from deeper in the house. Terrific. Adam had found himself some woman for the night. At least he'd be too preoccupied to give her any shit. Leaving the dirty dishes where they lay, she crept into her bedroom and closed the door, trying not to notice the sad remains of her guitar. She threw herself down on the bed instead, and stared at the ceiling.

Her heart beat and fluttered beneath the thin skin of her chest, cradled in its nest of ribs. She lay there, breathing ragged, licking her lips, feeling as though something was about to happen, something important, that was going to happen the very next minute. But of course, nothing happened, except that Fliss could feel her lips on Teresa's again, feel how warm they were from the sun, the slight tingle of salt on them, the way they'd parted against her own, whispered ripe and full under hers. She closed her eyes, close to swooning. And was at the beach again, the sun hot against her bare head, the waves lapping at the sand behind her, and Teresa, lying back on the beach beside her, dozing, unaware she was even there. Again and again, she relived the moment of bending down to kiss Teresa, their lips together, a slight pressure, a brush of lips against lips that had her breath swelling in her chest so that she wanted to moan aloud. Then the way Teresa had responded to the kiss, her hand coming up, grazing Fliss' shoulder, then fingers entwined in her hair.

It didn't matter that Teresa had pushed her away, had sat up, properly awake and flustered, not looking at her. For a moment there, she had responded, she had kissed her back, hungry for the touch. That moment would sustain Fliss.

It also woke something inside her. Possessed by a longing she couldn't find words to do justice, every nerve seemed awake and on fire. Her body burned, her mind slid from one dream to another. She rolled over onto her side, and tried to breathe normally, one hand pressed to her breast as if to physically calm the mad beating of her heart.

Laughter seeped through the walls into her room, and Fliss groaned. A woman's laughter, flirty and admiring. She could hear the rumble of her brother's voice, not able to, and definitely not wanting to make out the words.
